Citrulline in a pre-workout: role and dosage (6 to 8 g)

Préparation d’un pré-workout avec citrulline malate 2:1

Citrulline is one of the most common ingredients on pre-workout labels… and one of the worst treated. Often named, rarely dosed properly, sometimes drowned in a “proprietary” blend. It is the perfect example of the active the industry loves to display on the front of the tub while quietly shrinking the amount on the back. At MyNutriLab, the French 100 % custom pre-workout brand, we take the problem the other way round: citrulline is shown down to the milligram, and you are the one who sets your dose.

Citrulline: what is it?

L-citrulline is a non-essential amino acid, known as a precursor of L-arginine: part of it is converted into arginine in the body, arginine itself being a substrate of the nitric oxide (NO) pathway. It comes in two forms:

  • L-citrulline: the “pure” form of the amino acid.
  • Citrulline malate: L-citrulline combined with malic acid (a 2:1 or 1:1 ratio). The weight shown therefore includes the malate.

That distinction is not a detail: depending on the form, the figure printed on the tub does not correspond to the same amount of citrulline.

The studied dose range

In the protocols used in research, the amounts tested most often sit at around 6 to 8 grams (citrulline malate often around 8 g, L-citrulline around 6 g). Let us be clear about this, because the regulations require it: no health claim is authorised for citrulline. So we promise neither “pump”, nor endurance, nor any quantified performance. We give factual information: the mechanism (precursor of arginine, NO pathway) and the order of magnitude of the doses studied. What you do with it is up to you.

The real problem: under-dosed citrulline

Plenty of pre-workouts advertise “with citrulline” but stop at about 4 g, well below the studied range. Worse: some conceal it inside a “proprietary blend”. You know there is some in there; you will never know how much. The reason is rarely scientific — it is economic: quality citrulline is expensive, and halving it protects a margin, at the expense of what you can actually read.

That is exactly the practice MyNutriLab was built against. A standard pre-workout is an average recipe calibrated on cost rather than on you. We think the opposite: every athlete deserves their own formula, and that starts with knowing exactly what is in it.

What “shown to the milligram” changes

  • Total transparency: the amount of citrulline is stated to the milligram, not hidden inside a total.
  • No opaque blend: every active has its own line and its own dose.
  • You decide: you move the slider, knowing exactly what you are doing.

Citrulline in a custom formula

In the Builder, citrulline is one of the actives you adjust yourself. If your formula also contains caffeine, let us restate the framework, factually: it is a stimulant, to be dosed according to your tolerance. ANSES recommends not exceeding 200 mg per serving and 400 mg per day in adults. For citrulline there is no regulatory cap of that kind, but the same common-sense rule applies: knowing your dose is what lets you control it.

FAQ

Citrulline or citrulline malate?

L-citrulline is the pure form. Citrulline malate adds malic acid to it (often a 2:1 ratio): 8 g of citrulline malate therefore does not amount to 8 g of pure citrulline. Which is exactly why the dose should be displayed to the milligram, form by form.

What dose do the studies use?

A range of roughly 6 to 8 g (malate often ~8 g, L-citrulline ~6 g). These are orders of magnitude taken from published protocols, given for information: citrulline has no authorised health claim, and we make no promise of any result.

When should you take your citrulline?

In practice it is built into the serving taken before the session, alongside the other actives. As this is a supplement and not a medicine, refer to the instructions for your product and adapt them to your routine.

Why do so many pre-workouts put so little in?

Most often for reasons of cost. Capping it at ~4 g, or melting it into a blend, cuts the outlay while keeping the word “citrulline” on the packaging. MyNutriLab does the opposite: everything is displayed, and you are the one who sets your dose.
