Creatine-free pre-workout: who it is for, and how to build yours

Open any standard pre-workout: chances are it contains creatine. It is an excellent molecule — probably the most studied in the whole of sport — but including it by default for everybody is a manufacturer's reflex, not an athlete's decision. Here is when it makes sense to take it out, and how to build a creatine-free pre-workout that is still complete.

Why would you want a creatine-free pre-workout?

Three situations come up again and again:

  • You already take your creatine separately. This is the most common case: a daily dose of 3 to 5 g, every day, training or not. If that is your routine, the dose built into a pre-workout is a duplicate — once your muscle stores are saturated, the surplus is simply eliminated. You may as well invest those grams (and those euros) in the actives that work during the session.
  • You cut it out on purpose. Personal preference, a particular phase, or digestive comfort: some athletes do not digest creatine well right before training. Taking it out of your pre-workout does not stop you having it at another time of day.
  • You want to separate the acute from the chronic. A pre-workout acts on THE session (energy, pump, muscular endurance). Creatine acts over time, through progressive saturation — which is precisely why the only authorised European claim (Regulation 432/2012) applies to a daily intake of 3 g. Two different logics, and you are entitled to manage them separately.

What its absence changes (and does not change)

During the session itself: nothing, or next to nothing. Creatine does not work like a stimulant with an immediate effect. A creatine-free pre-workout therefore stays perfectly complete as long as everything else is well dosed:

  • Caffeine — from 0 to 200 mg per serving with us (200 mg is the cap recommended by ANSES per serving), depending on your tolerance;
  • L-citrulline — 6 to 8 g, the full dose, not the usual sprinkle;
  • Beta-alanine — 2 to 4 g for long sets;
  • Electrolytes — potassium, magnesium, sodium for the sessions that make you sweat.

The full detail of each active, its studies and its doses can be found in our glossary of the 12 actives.

How to build it at MyNutriLab

It is literally one gesture: in the Builder, slide the creatine slider down to 0 mg. The formula adjusts, and so does the price — you only pay for the actives that are really there, to the milligram. You can also simply tell the AI Coach (“no creatine”): it will take that into account for the whole conversation.

If you would rather start from a ready-made base, several of our 14 preset formulas are already creatine-free — such as MMA FUEL or PADEL REACT — and all of them stay editable.

The 3 questions to ask yourself before removing an active

  • Am I already taking it elsewhere (a separate course, another supplement)?
  • Am I after an effect during the session, or an effect that builds up over weeks?
  • Would those grams be better invested in the full dose of another active?

That is exactly the MyNutriLab logic: no imposed mix, no proprietary blend — your sport, your goals, your formula. Discover the ready-made formulas or build your own to the milligram.
