Training in the evening: how to handle the caffeine in your pre-workout

The 7 pm session is the reality for most athletes who hold down a job. And that is exactly where the standard pre-workout falls down: its single caffeine dose, designed for the morning trainer, is still in your system by the time you go to bed. Here is how to keep the energy of the session without wrecking the night.

The real issue: the half-life of caffeine

Caffeine has a half-life of roughly 5 to 6 hours: if you take 200 mg at 6 pm, you still have something in the order of 100 mg in your system between 11 pm and midnight. It varies hugely from one person to another (caffeine metabolism differs strongly between individuals), but the rule of caution we give in our FAQ is simple: avoid a caffeinated dose after 5 pm if you care about your night.

Three strategies for the evening session

1. Dose low, really low

A pre-workout does not need 300 mg of caffeine to exist. At MyNutriLab the slider moves in 25 mg steps: at 75-100 mg (the equivalent of a short, strong coffee), plenty of athletes find their early-evening balance. Our “mild” formulas such as ENDURANCE RUN or PUMP are calibrated at 100 mg, precisely for that.

2. Switch to zero caffeine

This is the radical solution, and the simplest: a pre-workout with no stimulant at all, betting everything on citrulline, glycerol, electrolytes and taurine. Our HYDRA+ formula is built on exactly that principle — zero caffeine, compatible with evening training. And in the Builder, the caffeine slider goes down to 0 mg on any recipe: the composition stays displayed to the milligram, and the price adjusts.

3. Save the big dose for the morning

If your week alternates morning and evening sessions, nothing forces you to choose: many of our customers run two tubs — one dosed at 150-200 mg for the heavy mornings, one at 0-100 mg for the evenings. This is exactly the kind of case where milligram-level personalisation earns its keep.

What to take away

  • Caffeine stays in the body for several hours after you take it — factor in the half-life (5-6 h) before dosing your evening pre-workout.
  • After 5 pm, the prudent move is to cut the dose sharply or go down to zero.
  • A caffeine-free pre-workout is not a second-rate pre-workout: citrulline, electrolytes and glycerol do the underlying work.

A useful reminder: caffeinated formulas are not recommended for under-18s or for pregnant or breastfeeding women (ANSES recommendation). See the 14 ready-made formulas — including the mild ones and the caffeine-free one — or set your own dose to the milligram.
